How can you take action when it comes to food and farming right now?

Reclaiming this connection with our food systems isn't just about eating better; it's about finding your people and discovering the collective power that comes from understanding the real stories behind our food.

How can you take action when it comes to food and farming right now?

Food is one of our most fundamental connections to the world around us - yet most of us have lost touch with where our meals actually come from.

Reclaiming this connection isn't just about eating better; it's about finding your people and discovering the collective power that comes from understanding the real stories behind our food systems.

When we get to know the farmers, the land, and the communities that sustain us, we start to see ourselves not as isolated consumers but as part of a web of relationships that can drive real change.

Supporting local food networks strengthens communities reduces environmental impact and creates the kind of human connections that make collective action possible.

Start small, think local:

  1. Find your local food cooperative - and visit to see what they offer - Sustain is a good place to help you find one near you.
  2. Buy one meal's worth of ingredients from a local farm shop or farmers market this week. Community gardens are also great places to find local products- lots of lovely ones on a map here
  3. Ask one local restaurant where they source their food - spark the conversation
Start a neighbourhood food conversation - ask three neighbours where they shop and why
  4. Host a "food story" dinner - invite friends to bring one dish and share the story of where the ingredients came from, who grew them, and why they chose it
  5. Propose a group buying scheme for your street, workplace, or community group. Lots of info on how to get started here
  6. Visit a local food processing facility or community kitchen to understand the system
  7. Choose one product you usually buy and find a local alternative this month
  8. Post about a food producer (not just a product) on social media to shift the narrative towards a #CitizenFuture.

We'd love to hear how you get on and if you can think of more ideas - let us know and we will add them to the list!
